AAR’s weekly and monthly rail traffic reports provide the most timely rail traffic data available, but the commodity detail in those reports is limited. Much more commodity detail is available from the annual Freight Commodity Statistics (FCS) reports, which are submitted by the U.S. Class I freight railroads. Data include gross revenue, carloads and tons. FCS 2019 is a PDF and spreadsheet of U.S., East, and West summaries. FCS History is a spreadsheet with U.S. totals for every year beginning 2000. FCS RR Detail is a spreadsheet with 1 year of data for each Class I railroad plus a U.S. summary.

Rail Time Indicators (RTI) is a monthly rail traffic and economic commentary. The first part covers U.S., Canadian, and Mexican freight rail traffic, containing tables and charts for the most recent month and the year to date. Data cover intermodal and 20 carload commodity categories. The second part of RTI includes charts and data on many key macroeconomic indicators, including GDP, housing, industrial production, employment, and more. A separate data supplement, for those who want even more information, has dozens of additional charts. Spend an hour a month with RTI and you’ll come away with a broad awareness of the state of the economy and rail traffic, how they’re interconnected, and where they might be going. RTI usually comes out on the first Friday of each month. A subscription comprises 12 monthly issues.
